Vox Pop and Focus Group Planning

Vox Pop
A vox pop is a short video that will help you to establish your audience. you will have an interviewer that will ask the person questions and you will video their answer. An effective vox pop will use a medium close up shot where the person is looking off screen and that the interviewer. You will need to make sure that you interview a variety of different people for example people of different age ranges and different genders. You must make sure that once the video is put together that you do not hear the interviewer and that the question appears on screen followed by multiple answers that people have given. You must also include the persons name and age on screen when they are giving their answer. An effective vox pop will also be filed at eye level this eliminates making them either look bigger or smaller.

we created 6 questions for our vox pop that will help to establish what the audience like when it comes to music videos.
  1. what's your favourite music genre and why?
  2. what's your favourite music video?
  3. do you prefer performance or narrative and to what ratio?
  4. do you prefer disjuncture, amplification or illustration?
  5. what do you like to see within and video?
  6. where do you like to watch music videos?
Focus Group
A focus group is when you take a group of people and take their opinions on things; in this case it will be peoples opinion on our chosen track. Their are three different methods that can be used during a focus group.
Thumbs up thumbs down
This is when you will simply ask the group to give a simple thumb up or down answer to see if they liked something. This will give you an impulsive answer and their first opinion, rather than having time to think.
Writing down
This allows to you get their honest opinion rather than people following a crowd and being influenced by others ideas. You would give them paper to write their ideas down once you have shown them something.
Pre-production editing
This is when you give them options and they must circle the one they like the most. This allows you to establish what people like the most and, again it is their own opinion.

Focus group questions
we have opted to use more writing down and pre-production editing rather than thumbs up thumbs down. We feel that it is more  effective to use the methods where the people in the room can not be influenced by others as we get a more honest opinion and people are not just following a crowd.
